Headaches should not be overlooked as they often turn out to be signs of a severe medical condition. Such as a damaged blood vessel or even a brain tumor.

It will also help you identify if it is certain foods or stress at work giving your headaches, happening 4 – 12 hrs after you have had a activating food. Moreover, you want to give your headache rating pointed at its severity i.e. 1 to 5, one being slight tension and discomfort and five being a disabling migraine. Only 41% believed alternative remedies and methods had any positive impact.

At the Harvard teaching hospital, named Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, have of late conducted placebo-controlled studies of chiropractic effects, and acupuncture on tension headache. One study concluding that out of 29 students suffering from a range of tension headaches, one session of acupuncture lessen the total number of days, when they had headaches in comparison with the placebo studies in which false acupuncture was conducted. Nevertheless, on a separate research on tension headaches, 39 students had no convincing evidence that they had gained from acupuncture. However, tests performed on more than 150 people at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, showed that chiropractic spinal manipulation for a period of six-weeks showed an equal amount of improvements. Even four weeks after the treatment people who had received the therapy showed a marked decrease in the frequency and the intensity of the headaches.

Herbal Headache Remedies - Medicinal Remedies And Supplements For Preventing Migraines And Other Types Of Headaches

Nearly all people at some point in their life experience a headache. They can run the gamut from very mild dull ache, to a throbbing, face crushing, nauseating, debilitating pain. Fortunately, there are several effective natural headache remedies for a variety of headache types.

Before you start to treat a headache, it is very important to know what type of headache you have.

There are two general types of headaches: Primary and Secondary.

A primary headache is the most common. This is when the headache itself is the underlying medical condition. These include migraine headaches, tension headaches, cluster headaches, dehydration headaches, etc. Usually, a primary headache is not dangerous, but it can be very painful, and make life nearly unbearable. But, what makes it primary is the focus of the condition is the headache itself, not some other condition. So if you treat the headache, you will eliminate the medical problem, so to speak.

Then there are secondary headaches. These are more dangerous because they are a symptom of a (usually) major health problem. They can pose an immediate threat, and cannot be treated with herbal or general OTC medications.  For example, a brain tumor can put pressure on the cranium, and result in extreme headaches. Also, a brain hemorrhage can do the same. A sharp blow to the head or other head trauma can cause water on the brain, or other inflammation that can cause a serious headache. These are all very urgent medical issues, and some aspirin or lavender won’t be effective in treating these problems. It is necessary to seek immediate professional medical treatment for the underlying cause. Only this will stop a secondary headache.

So, once you determine you have a primary headache, here are several great natural headache remedies :

Feverfew - This can be a great herb for treating a migraine. It will reduce the frequency of a migraine occurence, as well as the duration, and degree of pain that comes with it. Best to take feverfew every day if you want the migraine relief. It will not stop a migraine once it starts…it is more a preventative measure.

Peppermint oil - Use a 10% peppermint essential oil solution, and gently apply it to the forehead. This can relieve the pain and possibly the duration of a tension or dehydration headache.

Tiger Balm - This is a combination of several essential oils, and it has a similar application and effect as peppermint oil. It is sold over the counter at many health food and supplement stores, or it can be found online. Studies have shown it works as a topical application to relieve headaches.

Melatonin - When it comes to migraines, this natural hormonal supplement has proven effective in decreasing the amount of migraines a person will have in a month.  It needs to be taken every day, but it can be a great natural migraine remedy.

There are several other great herbal headache remedies , but these are some of the most effective for stopping migraines and tension headaches.
